the french idea of happily ever after is a gift

How would the French define marriage? What does marriage mean to the French after 10 or 20 years?

Overall the French are romantic and passionate peoples. So a marriage is not about trying to be best friends, as sometimes seen in America, but is much more about keeping the relationship as lovers, adults and parents instead of friends. Therefore the French have a greater tendency to challenge themselves and their partner. They may argue in public, but it is often with passion and respect.

They support their partner in a different way. The French tend to have more support coming from others besides their partners. They usually have more friends, most likely due to the size of the country. Many citizens of France tend to stay in the same city for 30 years or more. By not moving they keep the same environment.  Therefore friends become apart of your family, which makes marriage more about the romance rather than security.
